Bond Over a Car Race
We’ve all been there as parents. Our child is into something we just aren’t that interested in but they really want us to get involved in playing with them. Maybe that activity was comic books and super heroes for you, or maybe it was tea parties and dress up, but for me it was always cars. My wife’s father was a big motor head and growing up she was influenced by the many car races he took her to and the mechanic shops he frequented. She loves cars and that interest in automobiles moved over to my son.
My son loves to pretend he’s driving the car. He’s only five years old but he already has an extensive Hot Wheels collection and he’s got a ton of cool car games and car race games for his Nintendo system. The only problem is that I have absolutely no interest in cars and car races. I just don’t get the appeal of driving around in a circle for three hours. I could get passed it with my wife but this is my son we’re talking about, I have to do what he likes because otherwise he’ll never bond with me.
If you’re in the same situation and looking for some advice, here are a few things you can do with your son to play car race with him and still keep your sanity. I discovered that there are a ton of online car games that we can play together that are simple enough for a young kid but difficult enough for a guy who hates playing racing games. It kind of puts me and my son on the same playing field and we have a lot of fun. We play car games on the computer and I got him an RC car for his birthday which we break out every now and then to race around our block.
The most fun I think I’ve had with my son was when we built race tracks for his toy car collection. We built this stunning race track in our basement that has a bunch of dips and turns and even some jumps built into it. We let the cars fly and see which one can reach the end of the track the fastest and he has a lot of fun. I’ve even started to develop a little interest in cars.
