A Few Good Ways to Use Your Gym Mat


It is important to get your children (and yourself) involved in activities that will make you sweat as early as possible. Regular exercise has a wide range of benefits for your health and if you are actively involved in exercising with your children it can also be a great bonding experience between the two of you. One of the most versatile pieces of exercise equipment that you can own happens to be the gym mat.

Gym mats and exercise mats turn the hard or scratchy surface of your floor into a fun and comfortable exercising area. There are a ton of things you can do on top of a gym mat that will not only be healthy and safe but will also be a lot of fun to participate in. Before I get into the details of what you can do on a gym mat let me first explain what a gym mat is.

A gym mat is usually a rubber mat that sits on the floor but you can also find foam mats and reed mats. Usually they are long rectangles that fit the size of your body so that you can lie on top of them. They come in two forms generally: the single gym mat and the connectible gym map.

Connectible gym mats allow you to link up a bunch of gym mats using Velcro panels on the sides of them so that you can cover a lot more surface area.

Gym mats allow you to turn any surface into a plushy shock absorbing one. They are great for strenuous activities that require a lot of jumping or falling. Gymnasts will use gymnastics mats to cover the gym flooring they are leaping on to and also to cushion their falls should they lose balance and fall off their beams. Martial artists will often use a floor mat to practice self defense techniques and break falls. No one wants to be tossed to a hard ground surface while learning a technique so a play mat helps with the practicing.

Remember, no matter what activity you choose to partake in, safety comes first. Use gym mats to cushion falls and reduce the strain on ankles, knees, and legs. Keep exercising regular and make sure to get your children involved. Put an exercise mat or two in front of the television while you watch your favorite shows and use it to practice yoga stretches or to do sit ups and push ups on.
