Handmade Beaded Jewelry for Kids
When I was encountered with the opportunity to make handmade beaded jewelry for a fundraiser project I thought it was a great idea. Even the most talented artisans will tell you that handmade beading is a fun addiction. And the cool thing about the fundraiser idea was not as much about how much money we could raise for charity, but that we could actually bring kids to participate in the beading event. The event could feature some professional artisans who are not only great at beading, but also great at teaching people how to bead.
Personally, I am not great at beading. In fact, I am a pathetic beader since my hands are quite large. But I really like the idea of raising money for charity and also getting kids involved in beading. There is something about starting a project, working that project to the best of your ability, and then finishing what you started. So a handmade beaded jewelry event is great not only for the charity but also for giving the kids a life skill. And next time someone tries to convince you that beading is not a life skill then tell them to think again. There is something so practical about connecting thread with gem and string with marble and cord with plastic that brings the whole idea to life. After all, life is like a puzzle that presents all kinds of challenges along the way. Sometimes all we have to do is figure out how to connect the dots, or the beads.
The above mentioned charity project is still in the brainstorming stage at this point. The cool thing about the artisans I know is that they all take so much pleasure in giving back to their craft. And what better of a way to give back to the craft of beading then to teach kids about handmade beaded jewelry and raise money for charity at the same time. I hope we can get the project off the ground some day!
