Zhu Zhu pets are the must have toy of Christmas 2009. It is hard not to get sucked into the hype – especially if you have a child that really wants one of these! I think for many parents it is almost like a fun challenge to get your hands on the hot ticket items!

What are Zhu Zhu pets?
They are interactive pet hamsters. All kids love having their own pets – and Zhu Zhu pets play to that desire. They actually make over 40 different sounds, including specialty sounds that respond to the environment they are in. For example, if your Zhu Zhu is in its bathroom, it will make teeth-brushing or toilet-flushing sounds.
How do they work?
Each hamster takes 2 AA batteries and they move around with small motorized wheels. There are 3 buttons on the hamster that will cause it to do different things. In addition, there are sensors on the Zhu Zhu that will cause reactions.
For example, if it bumps something with its nose, it will back up.
How many Zhu Zhu pets are there?
There are five different characters (which makes this a collectable item):

The different accessories and environments all interact with the hamster. For example, the Hamster funhouse is a track that the Zhu Zhu pet can roll onto by itself and travel around. There are sensors along the way that cause the hamster to make funny sounds and movements.
How to buy a Zhu Zhu pet?
Right now, because these are hot items they are hard to get a hold of. Toys R Us has been offering pre-orders of Zhu Zhu pets periodically. Target and Wal-Mart carry them, but they sell out fast. So you will have to figure out when your local store is receiving a shipment in order to get one at regular retail price.
The only other course is to buy them online at Amazon.com, Ebay.com, or on Craigslist.com. You can also check out Zhu Zhu Pets at Toy Titan. Please be aware that you will probably be paying a premium price because of the popularity and scarcity of this toy.
